Opdateret 2020-10-13.

Indhold

Indledning

Forkortelserne - the abbreviations: s = søn af / son of; d = datter af / daughter of; m = gift med / married to; gs = barnebarn / grandchild; er anvendt i listerne / are used in the text.

Braunschweig-Lüneburg after Magnus of the Necklace
After the death of Magnus II in 1373 the War of Succession broke out and Dukes of Sachsen-Wittenberg claimed the Lüneburg land against Magnus's widow and sons.
The claimers were Wenceslaus I of Sachsen-W. (W400) and his nephew Albert IV of Sachsen-W. (W410) (The Ascanins).
A reconciliation was agreed 1374, and the principality would alternatively be governed by the Ascanians and the Welfs beginning with the Ascanians. After Wenceslaus I and Albert IV had died, the ruling power would go to Magnus II's sons. An internal disagreement broke out at the Ascanians in 1388 and Wenceslaus prepared an army. However, he fell ill and died shortly thereafter.
A decisive battle 28/05 1388 was won by the Welf Henry (W245) and according to the agreement from 1373 the ruling power now went to the Welfs and Henry became the principal duke to his death 14/10 1416.
However, the agreement of 1374 was abolished and a new inheritance agreement was cocluded in 1389 and the Welfs were secured the pricipality of the Lüneburg land.

Grubenhagen Duchy
Heinrich I (W230) had decided that his sons should rule jointly after his death.
Heinrich II (W260) ruled 1322-1351, Ernest II (W270) ruled 1322-1361, William II (W280) ruled 1322-1360, and Johann II (281) ruled 1322-1325.
Ernst lived for the longest time, and his sons (W271 + 272) inherited the ruling power of Grubenhagen. However, John III (W272) abdicated 1364 to join the clergy, and Albert III (W271) became sole ruler from 1364 to 1383.

Braunschweig-Grubenhagen is divided
Heinrich V (W274) divided the duchy in 1440 and gave a part (Part 2) to his brother Albrecht V (W275).
When Heinrich died in 1464 Albrecht became regent for Heinrich's son Heinrich VI (W276). However, Heinrich VI died without descendants, and the land went to Albrecht V's line. Unfortunately (or fortunately) only one of Albert's sons, Philip (W277) was still alive, and he reunited Grubenhagen in 1526.

The Braunschweig-Göttingen Duchy absorbed
Otto VI (W291) had no male heir, and in 1463 the BS-Göttingen Duchy was absorbed by Braunschweig-Calenberg.
In 1428 Bernard I (W246) exchanged Wolfenbüttel for Lüneburg
belonging to the nephews, Heinrich II / III's (W245) sons William I / IV (W300) and Henry I / IV (W310).

In 1432 the nephews founded the Calenberg Duchy from a part of the Lüneburg land
and brother Henry (W310) kept Wolfenbüttel until he died in 1473, when William took Wolfenbüttel back.
William also attached Göttingen to Calenberg in 1463, when Otto (W291) had died.
